A Gadwal saree in deep purple silk with a wide gold woven border, worn against a red backdrop

Nobody buys a saree for no reason.

On the loom this week: a Gadwal in deep indigo.

This week

Indigo, and a little patience

This week the loom has been full of deep indigo. It is a Gadwal, cotton in the body and silk at the border, and the two threads never want to agree at first. You have to let them settle into each other, a few rows at a time.

I keep stopping to hold it up to the window. In the morning it is almost black; by evening it turns the blue of ink just before it dries. I think it will be someone's wedding saree, though I don't yet know whose.

There will only ever be twenty-five of this one. When the last of them comes off the loom, I will tell you here first.

Finished, every piece

Every saree leaves here finished. The blouse piece is ready, the fall is stitched along the hem and the pico rolled by hand, all before it ships — so you can unfold it and wear it the same day.

Made to fit, if you'd like

And I can go further. Send me your measurements, or come and see me, and I'll stitch the blouse to fit you, make any alterations, and finish the whole look so it arrives ready — made for you, end to end.
